Digital AP Exams: Understanding the Landscape for 2024

WHAT STUDENTS NEED TO KNOW

digital AP exams

In 2024, the College Board will offer a selection of digital AP exams. The digital exams will be available for eight subjects, and both schools and students will have the opportunity to opt in or out. So, what does your child need to know?

Who will take digital AP exams?

The digital AP exams will be available in the following subjects:

  • AP Computer Science Principles
  • AP English Language and Composition
  • AP English Literature and Composition
  • AP European History
  • AP Seminar
  • AP U.S. History
  • AP World History: Modern
  • AP African American History

For this year, schools and students will have the option to take a paper or digital version. Some schools may opt in for all students, and others will give students the choice.

How should my child prepare for digital AP exams?

Much of the preparation for digital AP exams will happen in AP classes. In general, teachers should be supporting their students to prepare and access the test platform!

This College Board Informational Video gives a nice overview of what the platform will look like and the test-taking tools that will be available to students. The tests will follow the same structure and timing as the paper exams, and students will be able to move back and forth between questions within each section.

The most important change for many students will be typing the Free Response Questions. We recommend that students who are taking the digital AP exam practice typing their essays. We’ll be offering that option for students taking our practice tests.

We are here to support your AP student, whether their 2024 exam will be digital or on paper. We offer tutoring for most AP subjects as well as practice tests for AP Biology, Calculus AB and BC, Chemistry, European History, Physics 1, US History, and World History. Current clients can reach out to their director for more information, or contact us.
