Why Practice Tests?

The Value of Rehearsal

Practice tests are a key component in the process of preparing for the ACT or SAT. Sure, they are time consuming, but their benefits outweigh that drawback. Below, our Curriculum experts answer some commonly asked questions from parents and students about the hows and whys of practice tests.

How often should students take practice tests?

While there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline, students will generally begin taking practice tests 4–6 weeks after they begin tutoring. Then, they will continue to take practice tests every 3–4 weeks after that, and perhaps even more frequently as an actual test date approaches

What is the value of practice tests?

Their value goes far beyond exposure to ACT or SAT problems. Sitting for a full exam in a test-like environment, whether that’s at a local Private Prep office or a quiet room at home, helps students prepare for the experience of a real test day, allowing them to build crucial skills like stamina and anxiety-management.

Will my student do better on each practice test?

The short answer? Probably not. This isn’t a linear process; rather, students will improve in different areas at different times. Over time, the testing experience gained and the chance to learn from test-day mistakes allows students to ultimately perform to the best of their abilities. Data from practice tests also allows tutors to tailor the process to a student’s current needs. Practice exams are like a scrimmage before a big game or a dress rehearsal before a performance—the scores aren’t what ultimately counts, but the real test will be better because they happened.

When and how should my student register for practice tests?
