Great news for students targeting fall SAT exams: SAT has just confirmed test dates for the first half of the 2025-2026 school year, and they have included a new September test date, bringing the grand total to five available dates from August-December.
What does this mean for test-takers?
SAT registration for the school year generally opens in the spring, so right now you don’t have to take any action. You can continue your test prep study path.
The new test date does open up possibilities for later in the year, however. If you’re targeting an August or October exam, you can stick to your current plan, but you will have the option of taking one more test if needed—which may be particularly advantageous if you will be entering your senior year next year.
Keep in mind, though, that scores from the August test date should be released approximately one week before the new September test date, when it will be too late to register for the September SAT. If you’re planning to test in August and think you may want to use the extra fall test as a safety net, be sure to register for both tests in advance.
Register early to avoid seat shortages
During the past year, SAT testing sites in many locations, particularly on the West Coast and in Boston, Washington D.C., and Chicago, have experienced seating shortages. As a result, it’s important to register early to ensure that you can test at a location that’s nearby. We update our blog resources regularly and will put out an alert when registration opens, so be sure to check back with us!
