What to Know About ACT and SAT Diagnostics

Why Diagnostics?

ACT and SAT diagnostic tests are a core part of the preparation process. They give educators and students a snapshot of their current knowledge and help project the process ahead. When a student takes a diagnostic, they can see what they already know and what they need to work on most. The data a diagnostic gives tutors is invaluable to make sure a student is as ready as possible for the big assessment ahead.

When starting the test prep process, we recommend that students take both an ACT and an SAT diagnostic. This will help determine the test to pursue where the student can make the most progress.

How Diagnostics Help the Process

By the spring of sophomore year, many students are ready to start thinking about the ACT or SAT. They have seen most of the content of the exams in school. The same is true for juniors or seniors looking to start test prep. For anyone starting test prep, the first step is to decide on a test. We recommend that students take diagnostic tests for the ACT and SAT to decide which one is the best fit. While the tests have similar content, the style and pace are different. After taking both diagnostics, a director will conduct a diagnostic review to suggest which test the student has the most potential on.

A diagnostic is also a valuable tool for a tutor when working with a student. It’s not just a score—the diagnostic test can help a tutor target the areas that the student needs to work on and plan lessons that play to their strengths. It’s a key first step to start the test prep process off strong.
